Dr. James Peterson is the host of WHYY's podcast "The Remix." Peterson is director of Africana Studies and associate professor of English at Lehigh University, a graduate of Duke University and the University of Pennsylvania, and the founder of Hip Hop Scholars, Inc., an association of hip hop generational scholars dedicated to researching and developing the cultural and educational potential of hip hop, urban, and youth cultures. A regular contributor to MSNBC Media, Peterson uses his breadth of knowledge to tackle everything from the politics of race relations, to cultural debates on the social implication of entertainers like Beyoncé. He has interviewed  a wide range of celebrities, academics and cultural critics. From Dr. Manning Marable to Lupe Fiasco, Peterson approaches each conversation with curiosity, empathy and an eagerness to explore topics from a fresh perspective. Peterson's new book is The Hip-Hop Underground and African American Culture: Beneath the Surface.
