Is Marriage for White People?

    Listen

    Hour 1

Stanford law professor RALPH RICHARD BANKS writes black women are more than three times as unlikely as white women to marry. And if they do marry, their husbands often earn less than their wives. In his new book about middle class marriage and race, “Is Marriage for White People: How the African American Marriage Decline Affects Everyone,” Banks studies American marriage declining in the last several decades; the changing expectations of what couples want out of marriage; and if successful African American women marry at all, they marry ‘down’ and rarely ‘out.’
