Hornist Dana Cullen’s graduation recital. Dana is from Reading, PA and entered Curtis in 2010. She studied with Jeffrey Lang, Associate Principal Horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Jennifer Montone, Principal Horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra. The program:

Alyssa Weinberg: Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano (“Homage à Ligeti”)

Dana Cullen commissioned former horn player and composer Alyssa Weinberg studying with Richard Danielpour as she pursues an Artist Diploma in Composition at Curtis to write a piece to pair with the Brahms: Trio in E-flat major, Op.40. The Ligeti’s Trio inspired composer Weinberg’s Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano.

Hindemith: Concerto for Horn and Orchestra

German composer Paul Hindemith published Concerto for Horn and Orchestra in 1950. The piece orchestra reduction on the piano gives you a little different atmosphere. The horn’s part is beautiful, lyrical as well as playful. The movements are marked: Moderately fast; Very fast and Very slow.

Brahms: Trio in E-flat major, Op. 40

The Trio in E-flat major, Op.40 is one of the favorite pieces for many horn players. Brahms pays tribute to his mother Christiane in this horn trio. Composed in 1865, the third movement he wrote right after his mother passed away and the tempo of the third movement is marked: Adagio mesto, which means slowly and sadly. The four movements are marked: Andante; Scherzo: Allegro; Adagio mesto; Finale: Allegro con brio.
