With Pennsylvania lawmakers failing to update sentencing guidelines for second degree murder by their court-directed deadline, the 1,100 people serving mandatory life without parole sentences for second degree murder are waiting to learn how their sentences may change in the future.
Cherri Gregg spoke with Jamie Silvonek, a senior reporter for the Prison Journalism Project who has served ten years at State Correctional Institution Muncy. Silvonek pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for her role in the murder of her mother when she was 14 years old. Gregg and Silvonek discussed how women at Muncy felt leading up to the missed deadline, what the next steps are for women serving mandatory life without parole sentences for second degree murder, and how Silvonek hopes sentencing guidelines will be changed in the future.
