Widener ROTC student has less-serious meningitis
An ROTC student at Widener University in eastern Pennsylvania is being treated for viral meningitis, a less-serious strain that isn’t linked to an outbreak of bacterial meningitis at Princeton University in New Jersey that is being blamed in the death of a Pennsylvania student.
Viral meningitis is less severe than bacterial meningitis, though both cause inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
A student at Drexel University in Philadelphia died of bacterial meningitis March 10 after she had close contact with some Princeton students about a week before getting sick.
The Delaware County Times reports there are no other reported cases of meningitis at Widener, which is located in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester. Students, faculty and staff have been notified by email.
