UPDATED: Underage driver kills 1 in Academy Road crash

UPDATE — Police have identified the underage driver as Winston Charleston of the 7100-block of State Road in Tacony. He is charge with murder,aggravated assault, involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle, accident involving death-no license, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and unauthorized use of an auto.

A 14-year-old boy is facing charges after he caused a fatal car accident early this morning on Academy Road.

The boy took his mother’s car and drove with two friends, ages 15 and 16, without headlights on I-95. At the Academy Road exit, the driver reportedly ran a red light around 2 a.m. and crashed into a red Volkswagen. The 22-year-old passenger of the Volkswagen died, and five people were injured.

Authorities expect the boy will be charged as an adult with vehicular homicide. He’s being tested to determine if he had drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the crash.
