Tylenol lowers maximum daily dosage

If you’re prone to popping Tylenol for your aches and pains, look out for dosage changes from McNeil.

The Johnson & Johnson division has lowered the maximum daily dosage for single-ingredient Extra Strength Tylenol (acetaminophen) products. The max is now six pills per day instead of eight.

An overdose of acetaminophen can cause liver damage, and many people accidentally exceed the maximum dosage because the ingredient is found in medicines like Sudafed, NyQuil, Percocet and Vicodin.

New dosage guidelines will begin to appear on packages this fall. Regular Strength Tylenol products will get dosage-lowerings in 2012.
