Tropical Storm Gabrielle has formed about 70 miles south of Ponce, Puerto Rico, according to the 11 p.m. National Hurricane Center public advisory.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, Gabrielle is moving northwest at 8 mph.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Puerto Rico and a portion of the Dominican Republic. Heavy rain is expected for that region.

The official National Hurricane Center five-day forecast has Gabrielle heading northwest until Friday evening, when the storm is expected to turn toward the northeast — away from the Eastern Seaboard.
