Transportation in Del. moves into digital age

Officials at the Delaware Department of Transportation hope an expansion in the use of social media tools will help get more information out to more people.

On Monday, DelDOT launched its social media initiative which will expand the department’s ability to communicate with the public.

DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks said people who may not get their news through traditional sources will now be able to stay informed through tools such as Twitter and Facebook.

“By using all of these outlets, each with their own specific use, we are ensuring that DelDOT will continue to provide Delaware’s citizens and visitors with the information that they need to make the time that they spend traveling throughout the state a little easier.”

In 2009, DelDOT launched its Twitter feed, @DelawareDOT, which includes news releases, traffic advisories and other information.

DelDOT also maintains a Flickr account, www.flickr.com/photos/delawaredot and a YouTube account, www.youtube.com/DelawareDOT.

Last month DelDOT started DelDOT Blogs, blogs.deldot.gov, which includes project updates.
