Top 4 stories to watch in NW Philly

Here’s a look at what’s to come on NewsWorks this week: 

1. After nearly three months of announcements, community meetings and counterproposals, the city’s School Reform Commission is scheduled to vote Thursday on the recommendations put forth in the Philadelphia School District’s latest Facilities Master Plan. The list most notably suggests closing 29 schools at the end of the academic year, including four in Northwest Philadelphia. They are: Germantown High School, Roosevelt Middle School and Fulton and Kinsey Elementary Schools. Check back this week to learn which, if any, of those schools will be open in September.

2. On Friday, the Northern Harmony chorus stopped by the Unitarian Society of Germantown in Mt. Airy as part of its winter concert tour. During the event, sponsored by Weavers Way Co-op, the group performed selections from its world music repertoire. We’ll have the story on Monday. 

3. On Saturday, Greene Friends School in Germantown and the St. Peter’s School in Center City teamed up to host the aptly named Joint Arts Festival. The annual event, which the schools take turns hosting, included vocal performances by Greene Street students. Check back early this week to learn more about the event.

4. Winterfest was also on Saturday. The daylong event, held at Mercy Vocational High School, located near East Falls, is a social event geared towards young adults with physical, mental and emotional challenges between six and 20 years old. The event included dancing, games and lunch.  Check back for that story on Monday.
