Top 4 things to watch in NW Philly this week

Here’s a look at what’s to come this week:

1. Geraldine Cherry was charged with murder in June for allegedly killing a fellow apartment complex resident. Cherry, who is being held without bail, is scheduld to appear in court next week for her preliminary hearing. Check back to find out if her case proceeds to the trial phase.

2. The Philadelphia Canoe Club will be hosting an open house today at its Manayunk headquarters. Visitors to the normally private club will be able to enjoy free demonstrations and canoe and kayak rides, among other activities. NewsWorks will be on hand for it all.

3. Mt. Airy will get a glimpse at what’s in store at Lovett Park next week during a design presentation. Volunteers from the Community Design Collaborative will present conceptual designs for the space alongside Lovett Memorial Library. Check back next week for a look at what that may be.

4. Germantown resident Earl Guydon recently received the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, the country’s highest civililan award. The 88 year old was among the first class of blacks to serve in the Marines. Check back to learn more about Guydon’s military service and his unexpected award.
