This winter proves busiest for Red Cross response teams

Winter is usually a busy time for the Red Cross, but the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter says it’s responded to 15 disasters in five counties in the last 72 hours. Two disasters per night is the average.

Ten disasters in Philadelphia, two in Montgomery County and one each in Bucks, Chester and Delaware counties have kept the chapter busy. It’s assisted 31 families in the last three days, according to its records.

This winter is shaping up to be more disaster-prone than usual. December’s 94 disasters were well above those recorded in December 2009, and last month saw 76 disasters.

More than 300 families have received assistance since December.
