Suspect in custody after double hit-and-run

A suspect is in custody after striking a woman with his car twice.

Police arrested 39-year-old Michael Saunders early this morning. Reports say Saunders hit a 21-year-old female with his car as he attempted to leave Albert’s Cafe on Grant Avenue around 2:30 this morning. The woman is reportedly the girlfriend of a man Saunders had been arguing with in the parking lot.

Saunders reportedly fled the scene, but returned. Upon returning to the bar’s parking lot, Saunders struck the woman again, along with a crowd of people who was helping her.

Police apprehended Saunders on the 3500-block of Fitler Street. He faced attempted murder, aggravated assault and DUI charges. As Action News reports, Saunders was convicted in 1999 after killing a person in a DUI-related crash.
