    The Sugar House casino has borrowed the $195 million dollars it needs to build the slot parlor along the Delaware River in the Fishtown section of the city. Leigh Whittaker is a spokesperson for Sugar House. She says they are expected to be operating within a year.

    Whittaker: which means that we are into construction of the building immediately, we are already starting to drive piles on the site we’ll be driving piles the next couple of weeks, and then you’ll see construction activity ramped up significantly. Barring any unforeseen extreme circumstance we will be open 10 months from now.

    At its summertime opening, Sugar House will have only about 1,700 of the 5,000 slot machines permitted under its gaming license. Casino opponents say they aren’t giving up on their efforts to stop construction.
