SEPTA estimates cost of different smart card payment options

    SEPTA smart card designs went on display in April, but the transit authority is still deciding what’s the best way to implement the new payment system.

    NewsWorks partner PlanPhilly has obtained estimates of the different variations of the fare system, which were discussed during a private meeting among transit stakeholders.

    You can read the full analysis here, but the cheapest option for SEPTA runs about $22 million. That would mean a one-way fare collection system in which riders can go inbound for free and pay double for outbound trips.
