Scripps National Spelling Bee champ to be crowned tonight

Update: Thirteen spellers are left and will compete in tonight’s finals.

Original report: Just 41 spellers are left. Semifinals have begun in the 84th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee, and a winner will spell his or her way to the top today. The pool of spellers is down from 275.

One of the spellers eliminated yesterday is Dennis Township’s Stephanie Miller. The 14-year-old misspelled ‘gauche’ and ‘schrieval’ during the preliminary competition, as the Press of Atlantic City reports. The winner will receive more than $40,000 in cash and prizes. ‘Money’ is a word everyone can spell; this youth competition could get heated.
