Salem County estimates $9.5 million in damage from Irene

A preliminary estimate of Hurricane Irene’s damage to Salem County has come in: $9.5 million.

That figure includes short-term and long-term repairs, but not the $4.2 million in damage from the Aug. 14 storms.

Most of the damage sustained was to the county’s roads and bridges and damage reports from each town are due later this week, Today’s Sunbeam reports.

Pittsgrove Township was one of the hardest hit, getting nearly 20 inches of rain in a two-week period. Freeholders have already appropriated $1 million for repairs from the first storm, and will consider additional funding at their meeting next week.
