Serious accident closes portion of Route 47 in Rio Grande

Route 47, a major connector between portions of southwestern New Jersey and Cape May County beaches, is closed in a section of Rio Grande following a serious motor vehicle accident earlier this afternoon.

The accident forced authorities to shutter the roadway between Bay Shore Road and Fulling Mill Road around 1:20 p.m. today.

Emegency radio transmissions indicated that there were multiple victims, requiring four medevac helicopters and a mutual aid ambulance response from area first aid squads.

The extent of injuries was not immediately available.
