Right NEast/Wrong NEast: Fishtown, we’ve missed you

It’s been quite some time since Fishtown was mistaken for being part of the Northeast.

But the Town of Fish is back, thanks to Flying Kite, a new weekly online magazine aimed at covering what’s cool in Philadelphia.

Flying Kite has a Neighborhoods sidebar, similar to NEast Philly’s, where readers can click neighborhood links and get the local news. Since Flying Kite is a citywide publication, neighborhoods are broken down by region.

Look closely at the Northeast. The two neighborhoods underneath are Northeast and Fishtown.

Whaaaaa…?

Since FK is new to the city — though its founder and contributors are not — we reached out to explain that while Fishtown is great and all, it’s not NEast. We also offered to share our list of Northeast neighborhoods for the sake of accurate coverage.

The response we got from Flying Kite was friendly and appreciative. But they remain steadfast: Fishtown is part of the Northeast.

So we’d like to break it down for those not familiar with the NEast: the Northeast is more of a cultural thing than it is a region. Being north and east of Center City does not automatically qualify a neighborhood as being part of our region. But if it’s geographical boundaries people want, geographical boundaries they shall have.

The Frankford Creek is the Northeast’s southern-most border, with Bucks and Montgomery counties and the Delaware River making up the other borders. In simpler terms, ZIP codes 19111, 19114, 19115, 19116, 19124, 19135, 19136, 19149, 19152 and 19154.

Fishtown is way on the other side of the creek in ZIP 19125.

Outside media don’t care about the Northeast. We have all seen them misuse, misspell and mistake our neighborhoods and our streets, so we at NEast Philly wanted to do something about it. When they get it wrong, we set it right in a segment we like to call Right NEast/Wrong NEast.
