Rehabbed Independence Hall clock tower to be unveiled Saturday

After spending almost two years in the dark, the Independence Hall clock tower will glow once again starting today.

The refurbished tower will be unveiled in an afternoon ceremony at Independence Mall in Old City. The public is invited to watch Mayor Michael Nutter cut the ribbon on the finished tower. at 5 p.m. Independence Hall will stay open ’til 6 p.m. that night for free tours.

Work began in July 2010 to repair the decay not uncommon for an 18th century building. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds made the $4.4 million project possible.

Uwishunu has a diagram of the tower depicting the work that’s been taking place.
