Reedy Point Bridge to re-open this fall

“When will Reedy Point Bridge be open?” a NewsWorks Delaware reader wants to know. WHYY’s Mark Eichmann has some answers from the Army Corps of Engineers.

WHYY’s Mark Eichmann published a story in March about the schedule of closures of the Reedy Point Bridge over the C&D Canal near Delaware City.

“When will Reedy Point Bridge be open, as I’ve tried to cross it a few weeks ago, and it was closed,” asked NewsWorks reader Gary.

    Eichmann has this answer:

I talked to the Army Corps of Engineers this morning, and they say the construction work on the bridge should be completely finished by the end of November, at which point the bridge will be reopened for good. In an effort to minimize the impact on the community, they’ve been opening the bridge on weekends since the project started, with a few exceptions.

As you discovered, the past few weeks, the bridge has been closed on both weekdays and weekends. That stretch of around-the-clock closures will end starting August 30, and the bridge will be open through the Labor Day weekend. After that, the Corps will go back to its plan of closing the bridge on weekdays and opening it on weekends. Then in October, the bridge will close again for several weekends.

The timing of the October weekends closures is not known yet. The exact date the bridge will reopen in November is not known exactly yet either. The timing of both depends a lot on the weather.
