Recovered skull is that of Wilmington boater who died in 2007

Gary Mayo disappeared when he fell off a boat into the Christina River Thanksgiving Day 2007. Despite several rescue and recovery attempts, his remains were never found.

But Wilmington’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says the skull that washed up in the port last month belongs to Mayo.

A report from the state’s Health and Social Services department says police investigated the human remains found Jan. 4 on tidal flats near the Port of Wilmington, and were able to use the nearly intact skull to identify it as Mayo’s. CT scans and dental records were used to confirm the match.
