Race car, shoe, thimble — which Monopoly piece would you save?

Monopoly fans have the power to choose which of the eight classic game pieces will go and which new token will replace it. What would you choose?

Atlantic City can use all the help it can get: hurricanes, struggling casinos, Steve Buscemi. Now the beleaguered seaside town is undergoing another potentially painful hit. One of the eight classic game tokens from Monopoly, which features many A.C. locations, will be voted off to jail — permanently.

Game-maker Hasbro has given fans the power to choose which of the classic pieces will go — race car, iron, Scottie dog, wheelbarrow, shoe, top hat, thimble or battleship — and which new token will replace it. The choices: robot, ring, cat, helicopter and guitar.

Which token would you like to see go? And what would you replace it with?

AAA Mid-Atlantic is trying to make sure at least one token gets roadside assistance from fans of the iconic game. The agency has launched a social media campaign to save the racecar.

Online footwear retailer Zappos has started a similar campaign to save the shoe. (It’s all very commercial, of course. Marketers are high-fiving each other across Madison Avenue.)

Introduced in 1935, the race car is one of the oldest Monopoly game tokens. It’s also one of the most popular. As of Thursday afternoon, it was the second most popular piece, with 14% of the votes, behind the Scottie dog, with a life-saving 33% of the votes.

At last check, the iron (6%) and the wheelbarrow (4%) were in the danger zone. And the shoe was just a hair ahead of the iron. Snap to it, Zappos!

Fans can vote until Feb. 5 for the token they want to keep and for the new kid on the board.
