Poets in the making: Philadelphia poetry group takes gold in international festival

Members of the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement went to San Francisco to compete in an international poetry competition last weekend. They came home the gold.

A team of five spoken-word performers together won the Brave New Voices Poetry Festival championship, beating out teams from around the nation and beyond. Two of the teenaged poets, Sinnea Douglas (18) and Charmira Nelson (17), and their coach Kavi Ave, sat down with WHYY’s Peter Crimmins to discuss what it takes to make competitive poetry, and to deliver a poetry duet called “Dear Daughter.”
