About 13,500 Philadelphians brought sneakers to work today for National Walk @ Lunch Day.

Employees around the city were encouraged to ditch their desks and do some physical activity during what could have been an otherwise stagnant workday.

Independence Blue Cross, the host, was 5,000 members strong as Mayor Michael Nutter and medical professionals joined them, the Phillie Phanatic and others in a one-mile walk around Rittenhouse Square during their lunch hours.

Sporting casual clothes and sneakers, throngs of coworkers entered the park to gear up for their walk, do some Zumba and refresh themselves with a water break before heading back to the office.
