Philly schools laying off nearly 300 staffers
School officials in Philadelphia say nearly 300 staffers will be getting pink slips this week.
The teachers union says most of the layoffs involve school counselors and support staff. A spokeswoman says 263 union members are affected overall.
According to district spokesman Fernando Gallard, a total of about 290 layoff notices will go out tomorrow. They take effect June 30.
The school district is facing a $218 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
