Philadelphia’s Orchard Project celebrating city growth
Fairhill, Hunting Park, Center City…
Not exactly the places you’d expect to find orchards, but that’s what Saturday will be about. The Philadelphia Orchard Project has declared Saturday Philadelphia Orchard Day as part of World Food Month.
Nearly 100 fruiting trees and shrubs have been planted around the city in the last three years, sprouting apples, figs, plums and more. Business and organizations all over are participating in Orchard Day by planting their own, hosting festivals and celebrating local foods. The full list of events for this weekend and the season is here.
This weekend, Roxborough High students will plant their orchard, a Hunting Park Avenue farm will add kiwi vines and Fairhill Burial Ground will host a homemade shampoo workshop.
