Philadelphia fleet manager says they can’t take in outside work


With budgets so tight these days for both the City of Philadelphia and the school district, members of City Council are looking for ways to save money through collaboration.

The person who manages the city’s fleet of cars is calling that a “non starter.”

Fleet manager for the City of Philadelphia Chris Cocci says there is no way his department can help other agencies such as the School District or Philadelphia Housing Authority with their vehicles.

“We have had conversations with the housing authority they have come in and asked us to do some work for them, but at this time we are struggling to keep up with our own repairs,” he said.

Cocci says the city is working with the school district to train young people to be mechanics, but even that has been problematic.

“We had seven, one opted out that leaves with six,” he said. “Three of those six have decided to go to college so at the end of this term they are not going to be with us.”

Fleet Management is talking to new candidates to hopefully bringing more interns into the program.
