Pedestrian struck, killed on Route 9 in Toms River Sunday evening

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Route 9 in Toms River Sunday evening, police said.

A Jeep traveling south on Route 9 struck a 72-year-old male pedestrian “that was in the roadway” near the Clover Avenue intersection at 9:27 p.m., according to Ralph Stocco, a police spokesman.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Stocco added.

As of late Sunday evening, Route 9 is closed in both directions between Route 70 and North Maple Avenue, according to Stocco.

“Information is still developing, and no names will be released until notification of relatives,” Stocco said.

Police expect to release additional information Monday.
