Paychecks delayed for Philadelphia’s laid-off teachers

Many laid-off School District of Philadelphia teachers will be able to cash their lump-sum departure checks today, though they expected to be able to do so Friday.

NewsWorks partner Philadelphia Weekly spoke with a handful of teachers who hours — in some cases, days — for the checks they were told they could collect last Friday.

After the district said some checks had been missed during processing Friday, the laid-off employees were told to return Monday. As accounts indicate, the checks became available after 3 p.m. Monday, but some were still waiting two hours later. The checks were dated for today, July 26, meaning those who did receive their checks before the end of the business day still had to wait to hit the bank.
