Pa. college students grow vegetables for needy

College students in the Philadelphia area are learning about agriculture while growing produce to feed the needy.

TV station KYW reports Saturday that the Hope of Harvest program helps supply food to area residents. Scott Smith of the Delaware Valley College in Doylestown says they expect to grow more than 50,000 pounds of vegetables this year.

The produce gets distributed to local food banks. Smith says the idea to grow the tomatoes, corn, squash and other vegetables came from students who wanted to give back to those in need.

Two recent grants worth nearly $100,000 will help expand the program.
