One teen killed, one critical after early Saturday morning crash in Toms River

    A teen was killed and another critically injured in a motor vehicle crash in Toms River early Saturday morning.

    Conner Hanfin, 18, of Hemlock Hill Drive in Toms River was driving a 2006 Honda Civic westbound on Yellowbank Road when he went through a stop sign and crossed over Vaughn Avenue, police said.

    The vehicle then continued on Yellowbank Road, struck a curb at the end of the cul-de-sac, traveled into a wooded area, subsequently striking a tree, police said. 

    Police responded to the scene at 1:36 a.m. Hanfin was extricated by rescue crews and flown by medevac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he is listed in critical condition Saturday, police said.

    The front seat passenger, Francis Duddy, 19, of Holly Street in Toms River was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. 

    Duddy and Hanfin graduated from Monsignor Donovan High School in Toms River last year, the Asbury Park Press reports

    Rescue crews from Toms River EMS, MONOC paramedics, East Diver Fire Department, Silverton Fire Department, and Toms River Fire Company #2 responded.

    Toms River Police Department Traffic Safety Officer David Bartoshek is conducting the investigation. Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Support Team and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department CIU Evidence Unit are assisting.

    No charges have been filed as of Saturday.
