Nutter endorses candidates for 1st and 6th District Council seats

Mayor Michael Nutter today announced endorsements for two Philadelphia City Council candidates. Democrats Mark Squilla and Marty Bednarek received nods from the mayor.

Squilla, who’s running for a 1st District seat, received his endorsement for his work as Whitman Council president. “Mark Squilla has shown why he would make a strong addition to Philadelphia City Council,” Nutter said of Squilla’s work in South Philadelphia and at the state Auditor General’s office.

Bednarek’s endorsement for the 6th District seat was due largely to his work on the School Reform Commission, and as a coach. “Having coached thousands of local kids over the past 35 years, Marty Bednarek exhibits true dedication to the community,” Nutter said.

Bednarek is up against fellow Democrat Bobby Henon for the seat Joan Krajewski will vacate. Squilla has the backing of retiring 1st District Councilman Frank DiCicco in the race against Vern Anastasio, Joe Grace and Jeff Hornstein.
