Non-fatal stabbing mars Friday night in Rittenhouse Square

Rittenhouse Square may be the poshest address in the city, one of America’s 10 greatest public spaces, according to the American Planning Association.

But that doesn’t make it exempt from violent crime.

Tonight at around 5, as offices were emptying and the Friday night rush was about to begin, a 42-year-old man was stabbed by a 52-year-old acquaintance. Both were drunk, police said.

As witnesses raced to report the event to the nearest beat officer, the victim began to wander away.  A few steps from the square, he flagged down a passing paramedic van, which took him to Hahnemann Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery. He was reported by police to be in serious but stable condition.

Police took into custody the alleged assailant, and found a knife they believe to have been used in the crime.
