Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is trailing badly in the polls and running out of time to balance the state budget.
So it’s no surprise that fellow Republicans have plenty of advice on how he can assure himself another term.
They say Corbett needs to toot his horn more loudly over his successes, score a major legislative victory that impresses average voters and take the fight to Democratic challenger Tom Wolf.
Former state GOP Chairman Alan Novak says support among some lawmakers for new taxes — particularly one on natural-gas extraction — could work to Corbett’s advantage if he goes along.
He says Corbett’s support might earn him votes to pass one or both of his top priorities: an overhaul of public pensions and the privatization of wine and liquor sales.
