Nearly 100 dead birds found on Berks County highway

Update: An early investigation by the Pennsylvania Game Commission suggests the birds were legally poisoned by a farmer, as the European starlings are considered an invasive species by the Department of Agriculture.

Original report: Are the mass bird deaths inching closer to our region? Several dozen dead birds were discovered yesterday on Route 222 in Spring Township, Berks County.

The Reading Eagles reports the cause of death remains unknown, but the incident appears similar to the mass deaths of birds in Arkansas, Louisiana and Sweden.
