Nature at work: Sharks devour dolphin off LBI [video]

Long Beach Island beachgoers got a front row seat to nature in action on Tuesday as they witnessed numerous sharks devour a wounded dolphin.

Lifeguards say the dolphin was spotted with an open wound, possibly due to a strike from a boat propeller, in the Beach Haven area during the morning.

Then during the afternoon, Kristen Kelly posted a video, shared above, and wrote that three sharks ate the dolphin when she was swimming all day.

Dolphins are commonly spotted just offshore during the summer, and Tuesday was no exception in LBI.

Anna Ricci wrote on Facebook that she also witnessed the incident, calling it the “nature chain.”

“Other then [sic] that it was the most perfect beach day ever!” she wrote.

The Marine Mammal Stranding Center called it “very sad.”

“Hopefully the dolphin did not suffer long. We expect that the carcass will come ashore. Please be aware if you venture out past the surf line,” an organization spokesperson wrote on Facebook.
