How does your family celebrate Mother’s Day?
For a growing number of women, Mother’s Day is not only about celebrating motherhood in their immediate family but is also about honoring and nurturing women through the community. If you’re shopping this week for your mom, your daughter, your wife or partner, your Grandma, a special woman in your life…or for yourself (as many of us do), check out these gifts and experiences that give back and support women and families in our community:
Take Your Mom to Designer Bag Bingo: Have a great time with your Mom and support the National Association of Hispanic Nurses-Philadelphia Chapter. This first ever fundraiser takes place May 12th at 2pm, so you can still do a family brunch on Sunday. You’ll be supporting the local chapter of NAHN which provides an important voice for Hispanic nurses and the Hispanic community in Philadelphia and surrounding areas.
Inspire Mom And Support Make-A-Wish Foundation: Does your Mother’s Day plan need some refreshing? Pack the whole family into the car for a road trip to Lancaster and support the Make-A-Wish Foundation at their annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. This event grants wishes to over a hundred kids and draws more than 5,000 people to see the trucks and support Make-A-Wish. The event includes music, games and food.
Help A Mom Reunite With Her Family: For the second year, the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund is trying to raise $75,000 for the Mama’s Day Bailout. The mission of this organization is to post bail for people who can’t pay and its focus on Mother’s Day is to reunite women waiting trial with their families.
Support Project Home: Project HOME is an amazing local organization working to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty. They have prepared beautiful Mother’s Day baskets featuring coffee, cookies, candles and more. Many of the products are created by Project HOME artists. Order today!
Give A Year Of School: Did you know that $58 can supply the tuition, books and other supplies that a girl needs to attend school in countries that are in crisis like Afghanistan? You can give that gift of education in your Mom’s honor through Rescue Gifts, a project of the International Rescue Committee. Your gift is even more valuable—Airbnb will match all Mother’s Day gifts.
Buy Jewelry With A Mission: If you like to buy jewelry for a great Mom in your life, take a look at the beautiful collection from Purpose Jewelry, which is handcrafted by young women escaping human trafficking. The proceeds go to International Sanctuary, an organization seeking to empower people escaping trafficking.
I’d love to hear about other meaningful gifts and events for this Mother’s Day—please share in the comments below. Happy Mother’s Day!
