Millville group challenges Levoy Theater’s historic designation

As the projected late summer opening date looms closer, the Levoy Theater faces another challenge.

On its way back from a renovation, collapse and rebuild, the Millville theater now faces the loss of its historic designation.
The New Jersey State Review Board for Historic Sites will hear testimony about whether the theater qualifies as historic now that so much of it has been rebuilt.

Theater officials say yes, but watchdog group Millville First says no. The Daily Journal reports Millville First insists not enough of the original building remains, making the historical designation granted in 1998 a fraud.

Regardless of the review board’s decision, the challenge is another roadblock to the theater’s recovery.
