Man shot last night near a Route 9 construction site in Toms River, authorities say

    Local and county authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred last night in Toms River.

    Authorities launched the investigation after medical staff at Monmouth Medical Center South Campus in Lakewood alerted police that a 36-year-old shooting victim had arrived by car shortly before midnight, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronoto and Toms River Police Chief Mitchel Little said in a joint release. 

    Investigators later determined that the man was shot near a construction site located at 2242 Route 9 in Toms River, according to the release. 

    “The victim was at the West Hickory Road entrance to the site when he was shot by an unknown man who approached him on foot,” the release said. “There is no suspect information at this time.”

    Toms River Det. Lou Santora in conducting the investigation with assistance from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit Det. John Carroll and the Ocean County Sheriffs Department CSI Division, according to the release. 

    The man is currently listed in critical condition at a local hospital, the release said.
