Laid off firefighters return to work in Atlantic City

Today is a happy one for 28 Atlantic City firefighters who were sworn in after being out of work for months.

They’ll resume work tomorrow thanks to a $9.7 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response federal grant.

The grant will fund two years of employment for the 30 firefighters laid off in September and 21 new hires. Two of the laid off officers were not sworn in today; one took a job and one is not able to respond to calls, the Press of Atlantic City reports.

City Council approved the SAFER grant in March and firefighters had to go through physicals and background tests before returning to work.
