James S. Herr, founder of Herr Foods, dies at the age of 87

    James S. Herr, the founder of Herr Foods Inc., makers of Herr’s potato chips passed away on April 5, due to complications from pneumonia at the age of 87.

    The Herr’s brand has been a fixture on local shelves for generations. In 1946, a 21-year-old James Stauffer Herr purchased a small potato chip factory in Lancaster, Pa. Today, the shiny bags of flavored potato chips can be found in most states and even in many foreign countries.
