Irene’s death toll reaches 40 across 11 states

    Hurricane Irene’s death toll continues to climb as state and local governments work to clean up the mess she left behind. As of Tuesday morning, 40 people in 11 states had died.

    New York has the most fatalities with eight, while Maryland and Massachusetts have just one each. A dozen people have died in our tri-state area, according to the Associated Press’ report.

    Pennsylvania has five fatalities, New Jersey has six and Delaware has two. Most were flood-related, but falling trees in Pennsylvania killed three people.
