In clearing flood damage, South Jersey counties warned of health threats

As the threat of flooding subsides, South Jersey counties are still in clean-up mode. And cleaning up is proving to be a dirty job.

The Cumberland County Health Department has issued guides to residents about how to go about clearing the damage, since the water build-up can also lead to bacteria build-up.

The News of Cumberland County has outlined some of those tips, which include:

keep hands away from the mouth and face while cleaning, protect and disinfect all wounds, even small cuts and scrapes, and wash hands profusely
ensure electricity and gas are shut off before cleaning
well water needs to be decontaminated

Municipalities are still waiting to hear if they meet the disaster standards to qualify for federal assistance.
