Future of Hershey chocolate factory unclear

The good news is the historic Hershey chocolate factory in Derry Township will be around for years to come, its function however, remains unclear.

The Patriot-News reports the 105-year-old factory won’t be turned into a store or used car lot and it will never produce the chocolate from another company.

According to The Patriot-News, the company that now controls the factory, Net Lease Capital, plans to find someone else to buy the factory, who would then have the opportunity to redevelop the site.

The firm last week told The Patriot-News it currently has no plans to redevelop the property.

The factory and the area around it has specific requirements attached to the deed, such as what the building can be used for and how it is to be maintained.

The Patriot-News says by this time next year, production at the factory is expected to be phased out and moved into this company’s West Hershey Pant expansion.
