Groening: Springfield of ‘The Simpsons’ is based in Oregon

    Sorry, Springfield residents of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

    Matt Groening, creator of “The Simpsons,” has revealed the animated town we visit every week with Homer, Marge and company is inspired by Springfield, Ore.

    Springfield is one of the most common names for U.S. cities, and Groening grew up watching “Father Knows Best,” also set in a fictitious Springfield.

    But according to reports by the Associated Press and Smithsonian magazine, a young Groening hoped the show’s Springfield was the one near his hometown of Portland, Ore.

    That Springfield wasn’t, but “The Simpsons” Springfield is. Alas, the mystery is solved.
