Grand jury declines to indict N.J. police officers in man’s death

Two police officers won’t face criminal charges in the death of a Vineland man who died last year of respiratory distress on his way to the hospital while in police custody.

Cumberland County prosecutors say a grand jury declined to indict the two Vineland officers in the March 2015 death of Phillip White. The officers’ names have not been released.

On the day White died, police responded to Grape Street for reports of a man “freaking out” on the street.

City officers eventually subdued the 32-year-old White after a struggle that was captured on video by a bystander. The video showed an officer hitting White and a police dog being used during the arrest.

There also were reports that the 32-year-old White tried to disarm an officer.

White’s relatives and their attorney could not be reached for comment.
