From museums to wizards: 5 family-friendly activities for the weekend

    Whether you’re a foodie, a wizard, a sailor or all of the above, there’s something for you this weekend.

     

    Saturday is FREE Museum Day!

    In keeping with Smithsonian tradition, many local museums will offer free admission on Saturday. Museum Day Live tickets are available free on the website, but must be in-hand to gain admission. Participating museums in our area include Penn Museum, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the African American Museum in Philadelphia, and the Academy of Natural Sciences, to name a few. Tickets cover up to two people per address.

    Saturday Faeries & Wizards Festival

    If you’re looking for an outdoor activity, hop the bridge this Saturday and head to the Faeries & Wizards Festival at the Camden Children’s Garden. From 1 to 4 p.m., magical young’uns can create fairy wing sand wizard hats and build their own magic wands and fairy gardens to take home! 

    Saturday Regatta

    Why not take the kids to enjoy the sights of over 100 sailboats competing in the Philadelphia Cup Regatta? Races start at 10 a.m. between the Betsy Ross and Walt Whitman bridges. If you prefer an inside view, you can watch from the second floor of the Seaport Museum, included with admission. 

    Sunday Manayunk STREAT Festival

    Kick off restaurant week in Manayunk with this fall food festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Shops, street vendors, food trucks, live music, and Recess for kids, including moon bounce, face painting, twister & 3d sidewalk chalk. Looks like a gorgeous weekend for a great time!

    Sunday Kindergarten Tea

    Do you have a current preschooler? Are you thinking ahead to kindergarten next year? The Cooperative Nursery School and Big Backyard Nursery School are sponsoring a Kindergarten Tea for parents wanting to explore options for kindergarten. Various area schools (private, public and charter) will be there to provide information about their Kindergarten programs in an informal atmosphere. There is no childcare provided, so please try to find alternate care for the kiddos. It’s from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Cooperative Nursery School, 6503 Lincoln Drive.
