First flu cases reported in N.J.

Even though the weather is unusually mild, some flu activity is already being reported in New Jersey.
There is a low level of influenza-like illness throughout the Garden State, but that doesn’t mean it will be a severe flu season, according to state epidemiologist Dr. Tina Tan.
“Sometimes you might have early activity that peaks early on in the flu season. Sometimes it might happen a little bit later,” Tan said Thursday. “Sometimes there just might be some ongoing activity throughout the season. So, unfortunately, we can’t really say what our season is going to be like.”
Flu activity usually peaks in the winter when people spend more time together indoors.
Getting a flu shot now still will provide some protection, Tan said. One of the vaccines this year covers four different types of seasonal influenza.
