A night of poetry and fashion at Philadelphia University

Last Friday, the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Retail Action Group (BRAG) joined Voices In Power to host their first collaborative event ‘Hear My Fashion, See My Words’. The event showcased fall and winter clothing collections by Philadelphia University students and local boutique owners from the area.

The crowd consisted of students, local business owners, parents and potential buyers. “We are so excited for this event, Philadelphia University is a very fashion forward school with really talented students,” said Eileen Keough who is a junior at the school.

The event opened up with spoken word and poetry by Luis Marrero who is the CEO and Creative Director of Voices In Power. “This is an intimate setting… we just want everyone to relax, silence your eyes, blind your mouth and open your mind,” Marrero.

A poem was read by members of Voices In Power at the start of each scene. “Struggle does not hinder success it makes it possible,” said poet Dulcinel Nunez as the opening act of the scene ‘Struggle’.

Other scenes included topics such as inspiration, passion, dedication, action, glory and more.

The designers of the evening included fashion by Zombie Flyd Nation, Michael Thomas, WearHouse Boutique, Sean Anthony and Lizzie Kay Lewis.

By the end of the event, there were several attendees eager to purchase some of the items showcased during the show.

“I was very pleased with the show, everyone did an awesome job and I am so glad to be a part of such an amazing organization,” said newly elected President of BRAG Catherine Buccello.

“With such a great turnout, we will definitely host an event like this again,” BRAG Treasurer and fashion designer Alicia Pickney.
